The question
Let's pick up where real life gets tricky. How do we train someone to find their way again? You're with Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Videos, on virtualrealityrehabilitation.com.
Meet the VR wayfinding and following directions
Wayfinding tasks ask patients to follow directions or a sequence of instructions through a realistic building or street. They train spatial memory and attention, and they're measured the same way we measure navigation in research tasks like the virtual water maze.
How it runs
Let's break it down. First, give a short route with one or two instructions. Next, increase the length and number of steps in the sequence. Then, add realistic distractions. Finally, review the route and errors with the patient.
Strengths and limits
What does VR bring to the table? Directly trains an everyday skill. Shares analysis methods with navigation research. The honest caveats. Some patients find busy scenes overwhelming at first.
What to measure
Here's how we measure the gains. Route errors and path efficiency: accuracy of navigation. Heading at decision points: whether they know which way to go. Instructions followed in sequence: working memory. Time slices: where in the route they struggled. A patient takes the right turns but stops at every junction. Time-slice analysis shows the hesitation is at the second instruction, every time.
The takeaway
Here's the bottom line: heading at decision points and its neighbours tell you how the task was done, not just how fast. Check the page for the full transcript and sources.
